Backend & API Developer Intern

About this Role

The backend is where reliability, security, and speed are earned. You'll design RESTful APIs that mobile apps and web frontends depend on, implement JWT-based authentication systems, and manage databases that serve real user data. You'll document your APIs with Swagger so the whole team can build on your work confidently. By the end of your internship, you'll understand how production systems are structured — and have the scars and battle stories to prove it.

What You'll Do

• Design and build RESTful API endpoints using Node.js and Express
• Implement secure authentication flows using JWT, sessions, and OAuth
• Model data efficiently across SQL and NoSQL databases
• Write comprehensive API documentation using Swagger/OpenAPI
• Handle errors gracefully with consistent response formats and status codes
• Secure endpoints against common vulnerabilities (injection, broken auth, rate limiting)
• Write integration tests to validate API behavior across edge cases

What We're Looking For

• Working knowledge of Node.js and Express (or equivalent backend framework)
• Understanding of REST API design principles and HTTP methods
• Familiarity with at least one database — MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or Firebase
• Basic grasp of authentication concepts (JWT, sessions, password hashing)
• Willingness to read RFCs and API specs — backend work demands precision
