Database Engineer Intern

About this Role

When an app slows down, it's almost always the database. You'll work on schemas, indexes, and query optimization that directly impact how fast our products feel. You'll design Firestore collection structures, tune MongoDB aggregation pipelines, and write SQL queries that run in milliseconds instead of minutes. Database engineering is invisible when done right — and you'll come to take a quiet pride in that. This is the internship for the engineer who wants to understand systems at their root.

What You'll Do

• Design normalized SQL schemas and denormalized NoSQL document structures for real applications
• Analyze and optimize slow queries using EXPLAIN plans and index strategies
• Build MongoDB aggregation pipelines for reporting and analytics features
• Structure Firebase Firestore collections for efficient real-time queries
• Create and maintain database migration scripts across environments
• Implement data validation rules and integrity constraints
• Document data models and relationships for the engineering team

What We're Looking For

• Familiarity with at least one database — MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Firestore
• Basic understanding of indexing, joins, and query performance concepts
• Ability to read and interpret query execution plans
• Comfort working with JSON/document data structures
• Detail-oriented — a bad schema is hard to undo once data is in it
